"About 5 years ago, I began suffering from a painful and debilitating problem in my feet. Ultimately, my doctors agreed on a name for my condition – “idiopathic neuropathy,” a garbage can diagnosis. As a friend put it, “the doctor is an idiot and the patient is pathetic.”

With the cause of my condition unknown, only the symptoms could be treated. The “treatments” such as various medications, orthotics, acupuncture, massage therapy, foot surgery, injections, and physical therapy offered at best only temporary relief. As my symptoms moved up my legs, I learned that my problem is known to be slowly progressive. I was told to expect to need a cane or walker, maybe not a wheelchair.

Suffering from chronic pain and limited tolerance for standing and walking, I packed on the pounds until I weighed about 190. I’m only 5’5”.  I began requesting a wheelchair or motorized cart in airports. I qualified for a handicapped-parking permit. Only in my mid fifties, I found these signs of increasing disability distressful.

I decided to hire a personal trainer, Bobbe Ariano, to help me get back into shape and take off the extra weight.  Bobbe has been extremely creative in devising exercises that require limited standing and walking. She challenges me in all the important areas: strength, cardio, and flexibility. She is encouraging, and gives me good advice regarding my diet.

With Bobbe’s guidance, and a lot of effort on my part, I have lost about 40 lbs., many inches, and progressed from feeling weak to being strong. I feel better than I have in years, and receive positive complements on my appearance. My mobility has definitely improved. With Bobbe’s assistance, I have learned to better manage my pain. I don’t think I could have accomplished this on my own.
